Whilst living and working at Rydal Hall, Ann Galbraith, author of the book "The Fleming Family of Rydal Hall"; researched the history of the buildings and the Le Fleming family. Ann has drawn together information from letters and papers in the archives to recreate and reveal the characters of the people who lived there in the past.
The characters are set in their historical and social contexts, and the personalities are described, using evidence from family letters and contemporary writings.
A continuous Fleming family line since the Norman Conquest can be followed, and the connection with William Duke of Normandy, how they gained their lands in Cumbria, and how they came to Rydal in the 15th century is explained.
The book is richly illustrated with a family tree, portraits, maps, pictures of locations associated with the family in the past, and extracts from ancient documents. Many of these images have been discovered through painstaking detective work and scrutiny of old documents.
In the 19th century the baronetcy and the estates were separated, and the baronet has been a member of the New Zealand branch of the family for several generations.
The account is brought up to date with the current generation of heirs to the estates and the title.
